New York Has Fallen: Muslim-Indian-Socialist NYC Mayor

(Staff post from the NEWS WEEK on 05 November 2025.)

MAGA Reacts to Zohran Mamdani’s Victory in New York: Zohran Mamdani has defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to be elected the next Mayor of New York City, something which has come at the dismay of MAGA and conservatives, who have quickly flocked online to share their reactions to Mamdani’s historic win.

Why It Matters: Mamdani, the 34-year-old democratic socialist, has become the first Muslim and Indian American mayor. "Today we have spoken in a clear voice: Hope is alive," Mamdani said during his victory speech.

Democrats saw wins across the country, flipping governorships in Virginia and New Jersey and sweeping judicial races in Pennsylvania. The results could signal a shift in where the country is politically, acting as a litmus test ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Many Republicans expressed feelings of doom, and a sense that New York had crossed a line.

While Democrats gleefully celebrate Mamdani’s win, it was a different story for MAGA and Republicans. "Legal immigrants who hate America elected a Communist Muslim Jihadist. New York City has fallen. America is next if we don’t stop it," said Florida Republican Congressman Randy Fine in a post on X.

President Donald Trump, who had already directed multiple attacks against Mamdani, including questioning his citizenship and threatening to arrest him, wrote on Truth Social, "TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT," according to Pollsters.

Texas Governor Gregg Abbott, who previously said that he would impose a "100 percent tariff" on New Yorkers moving to Texas, wrote on X in a post viewed 1.7 million times, "Join me for a moment of silence for NYC. Thoughts & prayers."

Republicans had already made their opinions on Mamdani clear, having made multiple calls for his deportation. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian parents and lived briefly in South Africa before moving to New York City when he was seven. He became an American citizen in 2018, shortly after graduating college.

The reactions down the political aisle tell two different stories, as progressives applaud Mamdani’s win, and other social media users have shared excited responses to the win.

What People Are Saying

Representative Andy Biggs, an Arizona Republican, in a post on X: "Congratulations NYC. You just elected an official who despises America and everything our Republic stands for. You’ve made your bed." New York City Council member Inna Vernikov, born in Soviet Ukraine and a Democrat turned Republican, wrote on X: "Welcome to the USSR."

Congressman Brandon Gill, a Florida Republican in a post on X: "America’s largest city will be governed by a Muslim communist largely thanks to mass legal immigration." Sami Gold, a writer, in a post on X viewed over 1 million times: "It’s actually kind of insane to see the worldwide reaction to Zohran Mamdani. Is this what it felt like to live during peak Obama hype in 2008?"

Robert Carter, a journalist for 5Pillars, a U.K. based news site which covers current affairs related to Islam and Muslims, wrote on X in a post viewed over 300,000 times: "Muslim New Yorkers erupted in celebration following the news of the projected victory of Zohran Mamdani — NYC's first ever Muslim mayor. This is a win for America, Muslims and Palestine. A massive slap to Israel and American Islamophobes."

What’s Next: Mamdani will become New York City’s 11th mayor when he is sworn in on New Year’s Day. He is set to become the city’s youngest mayor in a century, and its second Democratic Socialist after David Dinkins.
