When J.D. Vance was a boy, his beloved grandmother “Mamaw” told her boozer husband that if he ever came home drunk again, she’d kill him. When he did, and passed out on the couch, she got a gasoline can, poured fuel all over him and dropped a lit match on his chest. He survived with mild burns, and later quit drinking.

One time when J.D.’s mom took exception to something the boy said in the car, she hit the accelerator and sped up to 100 miles per hour, screaming that she was going to kill them both. When he jumped in the backseat hoping to protect himself from the impact, he recalls, she instead pulled the car over “to beat the s- -t out of me.” The evening concluded with Mom being hauled away in a police car.

One of J.D.’s stepdads, Bob, though kindhearted, had a bad case of “Mountain Dew mouth.” Half his teeth had fallen out, the other half were black, brown and misshapen. J.D. and his people are called rednecks, white trash, hillbillies. But Vance made it out of the holler, way out. The Marines led him to Ohio State, then Yale Law School and finally a job as a principal at a Silicon Valley investment firm. Looking back on his youth, and all he fled, yields a frank, unsentimental, harrowing memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” It’s a superb book given an extra layer of importance by its political reverberations: When Vance returns home these days, he sees yard after yard festooned with Trump signs.

Fireman Sam Treads Over Torn Koran Page

Fireman Sam is embroiled in an unlikely Islamophobia row after a fireman appeared to tread on a page from the Quran in an episode of the popular children’s programme. Channel 5 has pulled the offending show and dismissed it as an “unfortunate incident”, with a spokesperson from production firm HIT Entertainment apologising “sincerely” for any distress it may have caused.

The episode, appropriately titled “Troubled Waters”, was first broadcast in October 2014 but the scene has only just been drawn to public attention. It shows Elvis the fireman slip on a pile of papers which then fly into the air, “briefly depicting” a page from Islam’s main religious book.

The scene has not gone unnoticed by the Muslim community, with Miqdaad Versi, secretary-general of the Muslim Council, tweeting that he was “baffled” by the decision to feature the holy text.

As The Express reports, Calver said he feared an inevitable confrontation between the far right and Muslims poses more of a threat than terrorism. He said that the situation in France is on such a knife edge that it could just take one more major Islamist terror attack to lead to a huge right-wing backlash.

Nice, French Riviera: Gun and truck attack leaves at least 80 dead in Nice: Men, women and kids strewn across road after lorry speeds for a MILE through holiday crowd watching fireworks, before gunman opens fire.

At least 80 people including 10 children have been killed and more than 150 injured after a 25-tonne lorry mowed down crowds for more than a mile before the driver got out and sprayed fleeing revellers with bullets as terror struck Bastille Day celebrations on the French Riviera. One eyewitness described seeing 'bodies flying like bowling pins' and 'hearing noises, cries that I will never forget' as the horror unfolded on a busy promenade in the southern city of Nice at around 10.30pm local time last night.

Identity documents belonging to a 31-year-old French Tunisian Muslim man, Mohamad Lahouaiej Bouhlel, were later found in the bullet-riddled truck after the gunman at the wheel was shot dead by police marksmen, security sources said. The source added: 'The identification of the truck driver is still underway.' The recovered papers indicate the man is a resident of Nice.

Chicago Tribune Cartoon Roils American Muslims

OH, NOES! A cartoon in the Chicago Tribune has offended Muslims. Cartoonist allegedly has gone into hiding. (Not really) Muslim leaders in the Chicago area are calling foul on an editorial cartoon published by the Chicago Tribune.

Titled “De-evolution,” the image by Michael Ramirez parodied the iconic “March of Progress” illustration (below), which shows human evolution as a series of figures evolving from apelike ancestors to modern humans standing erect. Ramirez’s work reverses the order, starting with a modern human and ending with the most devolved figure: a man lying prostrate as if in prayer, labeled with the word “ISIS.”

“It makes it as if ISIS is just your average, mainstream Muslim who’s prostrating in prayer  – something we all do – as opposed to what is unique and problematic about them,” said Ahmed Rehab of designated terrorist group CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations).

Two years ago, I was called into a meeting with the undersecretary of defense for intelligence and the director of national intelligence, and after some “niceties,” I was told by the USDI that I was being let go from DIA. It was definitely an uncomfortable moment (I suspect more for them than me).

I asked the DNI (Gen. James Clapper) if my leadership of the agency was in question and he said it was not; had it been, he said, they would have relieved me on the spot. I knew then it had more to do with the stand I took on radical Islamism and the expansion of al Qaeda and its associated movements. I felt the intel system was way too politicized, especially in the Defense Department.

After being fired, I left the meeting thinking, “Here we are in the middle of a war, I had a significant amount of combat experience (nearly five years) against this determined enemy on the battlefield and served at senior levels, and here it was, the bureaucracy was letting me go.” Amazing.

WASHINGTON — A top military adviser to Donald Trump is being vetted to be his running mate, The Post has learned. The General forced out by Obama is on Trump’s VP short list.

The outspoken and brash Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn — who was forced out of his post by the Obama administration in 2014 after pointing out the rising global jihadist threat — has already briefed the Republican presidential candidate on several occasions and is in close touch with high levels of Trump’s staff.

Flynn joins the ranks of GOP politicians being looked at for the high-profile pick, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa. Trump spent the holiday weekend with two of the contenders.

Four BLM (Black Lives Matter Movement) gunmen have shot 11 police officers and two civilians, killing at least five officers during a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas on Thursday night (local time), local police said.

The shootings have been described by a President Obama as a 'vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement'. According to statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the attack is the deadliest for law enforcement since 9/11.

He added, “The president does not define the terror issue clearly. Here’s why: Barack Obama’s father, who abandoned his family, was a Muslim who eventually turned atheist. Then his mother married another Muslim, moving young Barry Obama to Indonesia, where he was exposed to the Islamic world even though he did attend a Catholic school in first grade. According to his half-sister, Barack Obama attended his half-brother’s wedding in the early 1990s. Malik Obama was a Muslim. … What we can tell you with certainty is that Barack Obama has deep emotional ties to Islam.”

O’Reilly concluded Obama should “aggressively call out those who abuse the Muslim faith, who commit atrocities under a religious banner. He should make defeating the jihad a central issue and stop trying to diminish Islamic terrorism by avoiding the simple truth – radical Islam is a direct threat to the entire world. Whether they live in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Africa, it is Islamic killers who are the central problem on this planet. President Obama should acknowledge that today and begin to correct his mistakes.”
