Singapore was Thursday urged to end the use of judicial corporal punishment after a security guard was sentenced to three months in jail and three strokes of the cane for spray-painting the word "Democracy" on a war memorial.

Mohamad Khalid Mohamad Yusop, 33, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to vandalism in a rare case of public dissent in the tightly controlled city-state. He sprayed "Democracy'' and a large "X'' on the Cenotaph memorial, which commemorates Singapore's dead in the two world wars.

"Mohamad Yusop exercised his right to free speech and expressed his political views about the failings of Singapore democracy, but writing on a public monument was the wrong place to share those opinions,'' said Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division.

India Wants End Of UN Burma’s Human Rights Resolution

United Nations, 26 April: In the backdrop of several “significant” political and economic reforms initiated in Myanmar over the last few years, India has called for the discontinuation of a UN General Assembly resolution on the human rights situation in the Southeast Asian country.

Indian Ambassador to the UN, Asoke Mukerji, participating in a meeting of the 'Partnership Group for Peace, Development and Democracy in Myanmar' here yesterday, welcomed the significant political and economic reforms instituted by Myanmar towards greater democratisation.

He said India would continue to support the steps taken by the Myanmar government towards reform and reconciliation, with reference to pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, release of political prisoners, holding of peace talks with the ethnic groups, including the Kachins and proposal for signing of a nationwide ceasefire accord soon.

Tens of thousands of Kachin Refugees fleeing from recent fightings between Burma army and KIA (Kachin Independence Army) into China are being pushed back by Chinese Border Security forces into Burma.

In recent past China had willingly accepted the Kachin refugees fleeing Burma into China and even provided with food and shelter and other humanitarian assistances. But this time was different as the obvious result of major drift between Chinese Government and KIO/KIA leadership.

“Before, our people used to run into China whenever the fighting started. But this time China’s closed the border and all the refugees are now stuck on the border. They are in trouble now as Chinese wouldn’t even feed them let alone providing them with shelters like they used to do,” said San Aung the go-between figure between the Army and KIA/KIO.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair gave a landmark speech yesterday calling on the world to unite against Islamism. Tony Blair, the Former British Prime Minister, delivered a keynote speech at Bloomberg HQ in London entitled 'Why the Middle East Still Matters.' In it he described radical Islam as the greatest threat facing the world today.

He argued "there are four reasons why the Middle East remains of central importance and cannot be relegated to the second order."

The first three: oil, proximity to Europe and Israel, whilst important, were not the focus of the speech. Blair rapidly moved on to the fourth and most important reason: Islamic extremism also known as Islamism.

He identifies the conflict in the Middle East as one between an open and tolerant viewpoint and a fundamentalist Islamist ideology. He said "wherever you look – from Iraq to Libya to Egypt to Yemen to Lebanon to Syria and then further afield to Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan – this is the essential battle."

In late 2008, satirical cartoon strips based on the Qur'an and depicting Mohammed were published on an Indonesian blog. The cartoons caused an uproar, including calls for the artist to be put to death, as reported by the Malaysian news agency "Bernama":

(JAKARTA, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Indonesia was abuzz Thursday over cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad which appeared on an Internet blog, and Islamic organisations protested vehemently against the belittling of the prophet and called for the blogger to be arrested and penalised.

Police have appealed for calm while they investigated the appearance of the cartoons on the blog in Batak, one of the local Indonesian languages. A police spokesman said it had yet to be proven that the cartoons were the work of someone of another religion who wanted to belittle Islam and that the server and blog were not hosted in Indonesia.

Burmese Army Drove KIA Out Off Pankhan Border Gate

NAYPYIDAW – During a clash on April-5 in Pankhan area inside Mansi Township of Kachin State one army officer and two privates were killed in action while six dead bodies and five assault rifles were captured from KIA.

The border area of Pankhan and Pankhan Village itself once was an official border-trading post through which goods both export to and imports from China were flowing peacefully. As a border-trading post Burma Police, Immigration, and Customs personnel were stationed there to manage the flow of trading good and travellers crossing the China-Burma border. 

But in June 2011 KIA insurgents had repeatedly attacked Pankhan and the result was the worsening security situation for government’s activities there. Accordingly Burma Police withdrew from Pankhan on 11 June 2011 and Burma Customs, Immigration, and Border Trade did the same on 5 August 2011.

KOLKATA: With the Maoist and KLO scare still looming over Bengal, security agencies have woken up to a possible terror threat that has sneaked into the city from as far as Myanmar.

It all started when Bangladeshi national Mujibur Rehman was arrested in March for staying at a guest house near Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital purportedly for the treatment of his "relative." The Chittagong resident carried a valid passport and visa and his aide Amanullah produced a voter's identify card from Hyderabad.

However, when the anti-terror unit STF took over investigation, it was shocked to find that Amanullah was neither a Hyderabad resident nor was he a Bangladeshi. He is a Rohingya Muslim from Burma who entered India some months ago. Worse, he had recently received a huge amount of money from Saudi Arabia through hawala channels.

Ko Ko Gyi (53) is well known in Burma as a former student leader during that failed 8-8-88 (Four-Shit) Uprising and one of the leaders of George Soros’ lackey “Open Society Myanmar” a loosely-formed leftwing-Socialist political grouping in Burma now known as Myanmar.

He had been jailed a very long time for his rebellious political activities by General Than Shwe’s  military government and he was released from Insein Prison in 2011 when President Thein Sein’s pseudo-civilian government took control of newly semi-democratic Burma.

He then formed the 88-Generationers group together with that famous student leader Min Ko Naing (King-slayer) and other less famous student leaders from 8-8-88 Uprising. They later formed their “Open Society Myanmar” with the political guidance and generous funding from American-Jewish-Socialist billionaire George Soros’s “Open Society” in 2012.

The two bombers who killed and maimed innocent people at the Boston marathon a year ago had come as refugees to America, from conflicts that America and her people did nothing to cause.

They had been granted the privileges of a law-abiding democracy, including education, health care and the precious freedoms for which Americans have fought in two world wars. Their situation was incomparably better than it would have been, had they stayed behind in Chechnya.

Among the many privileges that they enjoyed religious freedom was by no means the least important. They were able to attend their local mosque, to take part in its services and activities and to absorb whatever lessons it had to impart, without fear of persecution from their Christian, Jewish, Hindu or atheist neighbours.

The Crisis facing the Buddhist World – The Buddhist World lacks an effective mechanism to help save a Buddhist Nation in Danger.

The crisis facing the Buddhist world is neither a decline in religious conviction nor an apprehension that truth underpinned by rational argument and new scientific discoveries will one day overtake and outstrip the core teachings of its founder which is a perennial fear bordering on despondency that characterizes several other competing religions, but the lack of an effective institutional mechanism that can lend support when a Buddhist institution, Buddhist community or even a pre-dominant Buddhist nation is in danger.

We see the lack of substantial networks of support driving threatened Buddhist nations or Buddhist communities into a sense of despair and hopelessness at times of an emergency.

Traditional Buddhist countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Laos are now under severe pressure to distance themselves from extending state patronage to Buddhism and erase their Buddhist country identity and embrace a secular identity while no such pressure being applied to countries in other parts of the world such as the Middle East or the Catholic belt of Europe.

Imams Gang-Raped and Killed 12-yr-old Inside Mosque

BADIN: The cleric of a local mosque reportedly killed a 12-year-old girl after sexually assaulting her along with three accomplices, local media reported on Sunday. According to reports, the girl was at the seminary for religious studies when Maulvi Ghulam Murtaza dismissed the class and asked her to stay back.

Imam Murtaza then reportedly called three other men and the four of them gang raped the girl in one of the rooms in the mosque. They then strangled her in an apparent attempt to cover up the crime.

After the family received information about what had happened, they rushed to the mosque to rescue her but it was too late. Doctors confirmed she was killed after a violent sexual assault. Following the doctor’s confirmation, police arrested the cleric and registered a case against him. The other three men are on the run.

YANGON: The launching ceremony of Burma Navy’s third locally-build frigate 108m long was held at Burma Naval Dockyards at Thilawar Naval Base in Rangoon.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Defense-Services-Chief and Army Chief-of-Staff Vice-Senior-General Soe Win, Navy Chief-of-Staff General Thuya Thet Swe, and other senior army and navy officers.

At the ceremony the newly-built second stealth-frigate with hull-code F14 was named UMS Sin-phyu-shin. Sin-phyu-shin or Sinbyushin meaning literally “The Possessor of White Elephant” was a famous Burmese king from Burma’s glorious imperial past.

Burma Navy’s second locally-built frigate Kyan-sit-thar (F12) -- the first locally-built stealth-frigate of burma Navy -- is now being fitted with her latest electrical and communication and weapon systems and expected to be commissioned this year 2014.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Ayaan Hirsi Magan Isse Guleid Ali Wai’ays Muhammad Ali Umar Osman Mahamud (born 13 November 1969) is the Somali-born American (formerly Dutch) women's rights and atheist activist, writer and politician who is known for her views critical of female genital mutilation and Islam.

She wrote the screenplay for Theo van Gogh's movie Submission, after which she and the director both received death threats, and the director was murdered in Amsterdam in broad day light. The daughter of the Somali politician and opposition leader Hirsi Magan Isse, she is a founder of the women's rights organisation the AHA Foundation.

When she was eight, Hirsi Ali's family left Somalia for Saudi Arabia, then Ethiopia, and eventually settled in Kenya. She sought and obtained political asylum in the Netherlands in 1992.

Burma Accuses UK Of Interfering In Arakan Affairs

YANGON: Presidential spokesperson U Ye Htut has accused Britain of interfering in Myanmar's internal affairs after it summoned the Myanmar ambassador in an effort to convince the government to allow humanitarian aid activities to resume in Rakhine State.

"The president has already explained to the secretary-general of the UN [Ban Ki-moon] that the government has taken the necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of all international organisations [working in Rakhine State]," U Ye Htut said. "So we don't need to say anything more."

U Ye Htut, who is also a deputy minister for information, also took issue with Britain's usage of the term "Rohingya" in a statement issued following the meeting with the ambassador. He said no official documents from the British colonial period had ever referred to Muslims in Rakhine State as Rohingya.

Two teenage girls who had become lost after skipping school to go shopping in Castle Hill were lured off a train and raped in broad daylight on Tuesday, police say.

Police are hunting for three men who struck up a conversation with the 16-year-old school friends on a train near Blacktown and convinced them to get off at Fairfield and go to a park where they were allegedly sexually assaulted.

Detective Superintendent Peter Lennon, commander of Fairfield Local Area Command said it was likely police would learn the identities of the men on Wednesday and asked them to come forward "before we come knocking on their door".

RANGOON — An opinion poll by a US government-backed pro-democracy institute has found that members of the Burmese public largely believe their country is “heading in the right direction” three years after President Thein Sein undertook an ambitious reform program.

Eighty-eight percent of respondents indicated that they thought the country was on the right track, while 6 percent thought Burma was headed in the wrong direction, according to a poll of 3,000 people conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), a Washington-based organization that receives funding from the US government.

The IRI results seem to indicate that public sentiment runs counter to views voiced by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who last year criticized the government for providing “no tangible changes” in Burma, which was ruled for five decades by a military dictatorship that ceded power in 2011.

LAGRANGE, Ga. A LaGrange woman has been arrested and accused of female genital mutilation and cruelty to children in the second degree.

The 35-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after relatives caring for her 10-month-old daughter realized the baby girl appeared to have been circumcised, said Sgt. Chad Mann of the Troup County Sheriff's Office.

The 10 month old was in the care of her father when another family member made the discovery. The baby girl was then taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she was examined by a doctor who determined some form of surgery to remove the infant’s clitoris had taken place.

British Muslim Doctor Charged for Girl's Genital Mutilation

London’s Whittington Hospital’s Muslim doctor becomes first person in Britain charged with performing a Female Genital Mutilation procedure. Two men will appear in court last month following a review of FGM cases.

The first ever prosecutions under the Female Genital Mutilation Act have been announced by the Crown Prosecution Service. Dr Dhanuson Dharmasena, 31, from the Whittington Hospital in North London and another man Hasan Mohamed, 40, are to be charged in connection with an incident following a birth at the hospital in 2012.

It is alleged that the doctor carried out the procedure after being encouraged and aided by Mr Mohamed. Announcing the prosecution, Alison Saunders, Director of Public Prosecutions, said: “The CPS was asked to consider evidence in relation to this allegation of female genital mutilation (FGM) by the Metropolitan Police Service.

OIC Controlling UN and Its Human Rights Council?

Despite bitter protests from Burma the United Nations Human Rights Council has extended on March-6 2014 the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Burma with full monitoring and reporting powers for one more year but replaced current Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana, who is widely hated in Burma, with a US-educated South Korean woman.

Ms. Yanghee Lee, 58, from the Republic of Korea, is appointed to replace Tomas Ojea Quintana, the outgoing UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burma. The announcement came this week as Baudelaire Ndong Ella, President of the UN Human Rights Council, made a decision although the new appointment is yet to be officially confirmed tomorrow.

She will assume her new position as the UN Human Rights envoy to Burma if there is no objection by the close of business in Geneva, Switzerland this Friday. Ms. Lee, who completed her Ph.D in Early Childhood in USA, has served as Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child since May 2007.

(Reuters) - Britain summoned Myanmar's ambassador on Monday to call on the Southeast Asian nation to allow aid agencies to resume their work in violence-torn Rakhine state, Britain's Foreign Office said.

Aid agencies were forced to halt operations in Rakhine last month when hundreds of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists destroyed staff homes, offices and warehouses as well as boats used to transport supplies.

Parts of the ethnic Rakhine Buddhist community have accused aid groups of favouring the mainly Muslim Rohingya people, who make up the vast majority of victims of ethnic and religious violence that has displaced more than 140,000 since June 2012.

Nathan Abela, president of Australian Defence League, an extremist anti-Islam group, was in his Gresytanes home last night when up to seven shot were fired into it. He escaped with minor injuries. 

In yet another western Sydney shooting, the president of controversial anti-Islamic group ‘Australian Defence League’ became the victim of a targeted attack on his home last night. Nathan Abela, 24, said “up to seven” shots were fired into his Greystanes townhouse around 11.15pm in what police said they believed was a targeted attack.

He said a man walked to his door and asked if he had the right house before firing into his front door and windows, forcing him to duck for cover. The ADL are a right-wing extremist anti-Islam group who are very vocal in their opposition to the religion, regularly posting derogatory updates to their near 2,000 Facebook followers.

Now infamous Yvonne Dunton the Maulteser-International’s American staffer who allegedly desecrated a Buddhist flag and triggered two-day mass riots in Sittwe the capital city of Burma’s Arakan on March 26-27 was stopped on March-30 at Yangon International Airport and prohibited from leaving Burma while Burma police’s criminal investigation is going on against her.

Burma watchers are speculating that her deliberate action of intentionally taking down the Buddhist flag flying at the house being used as the Malteser Warehouse was a planned political act. In two videos released by Maulteser-International very soon after The Sittwe Riots both Maulteser Spokesperson Johannes Kaltenbach and Yvonne Dunton herself admitted her deliberate removal of the Buddhist flag.

Especially during the most sensitive period just before 2014 Burma Census and in the middle of Yakhine-Buddhists’ campaign of raising Buddhist flags to protest against UNFPA-sponsored Census counting the Bengali-Muslims as newly-invented race Rohingya.

Burma Navy’s Combined Fleet Exercise: Sea Shield-2014

On the early morning of March-23 Burma Navy staged their very first combined fleet exercise on the blue-water-sea off Burma’s Coco Islands in Burma’s territorial waters of the Indian Ocean. The fleet operation code-named Sea Shield-2014 was participated by all the frigates and light-frigates of Burma Navy.

The fleet exercise was attended by Defense Chief SG Min Aung Hlaing and other senior military officers from Burma armed forces. The rectangular sea area bounded by following four coordinate points was declared on March-18 the prohibited area from March-19 to March-27 for the war-game Sea Shield-2014.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi shocked many of her supporters and admirers when, in a BBC interview in January of last year, she expressed support for the Tatmadaw, saying: “The truth is that I am very fond of the army, because I always thought of it as my father’s army.”

She also admitted that “there are many who have criticized me for being what they call a poster girl for the army.” But as if to reinforce that impression, last year, on March 27, she attended the Armed Forces Day parade in Naypyitaw and watched soldiers marching in perfect formation past the grandstand where she sat, tanks thundering past, helicopters buzzing by and fighting jets flying overhead.
