Indonesia's top Islamic body issues fatwa against measles vaccine, calling it 'religiously forbidden': The Islamic body is led by Joko Widodo's new controversial vice presidential running mate

The organisation justifies that the vaccine contains pork and that they have "no choice" but the vaccines are still allowed for now due to a lack of alternatives. The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) justified the ruling by claiming the vaccine contains traces of pork and human cells, which are banned in the Muslim religion.

The organisation is chaired by Ma'ruf Amin, who was recently controversially announced as Indonesian President Joko Widodo's running mate in next year's presidential election. However, the fatwa also states that the use of the product will be allowed for the time being due to the lack of viable alternatives.

"We've found ourselves in a position where we have no choice … there has not been a vaccine found to be halal and sacred," an MUI official told CNN Indonesia. He said the religious organisation understood the dangers associated with not getting children immunised.

IT WAS ON September 16, 2001, five days after the 9/11 attacks, that President George W. Bush declared his now-infamous “war on terrorism.” Other governments around the world followed suit — but few matched the speed, intensity, and sheer cynicism with which the autocrats in Beijing aligned themselves with the Bush administration.

Dogged by protests and revolts from a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority called the Uighurs in the vast and autonomous Central Asian border region of Xinjiang — or East Turkestan, as it is historically referred to by the Uighurs — the Chinese spotted an opportunity.

In the weeks and months after 9/11, Beijing began submitting documents to the United Nations alleging that the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, or ETIM — a group that few people had ever heard of, or could even confirm the existence of — was a “major component of the terrorist network headed by Osama bin Laden” and “an important part of his terrorist forces.”

On June 1, sometime between the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in early May, and its demand in late June that Asian buyers fully halt Iranian oil purchases, PetroChina snuck in a shipment of Iranian crude through Myanmar to its Yunnan Petrochemical refinery in southern China.

On any other route, this would have been just another Iranian oil shipment. But using the Myanmar-China oil and gas pipeline brings new complications. That’s because the pipeline has a new avatar — it is now a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, along with other large infrastructure projects that were not originally a part of BRI, but were included later to boost the profile of the program.

Sending Iranian crude through an oil pipeline with the “Belt and Road” label removes any doubts of whether BRI’s projects have political motives or not. For critics of BRI, it adds fodder to the narrative that the infrastructure plan is a tool for China to undercut the influence of the US. BRI already has a serious public relations problem and is viewed with suspicion, sometimes for good reason.

Winter 1969

Late winter days had arrived and in the heavy dawn mist the train appeared to be struggling by carrying a seemingly heavy load. The snowy cloud were now covering the faraway western mountain ranges.

Train was on the return trip from Kyauk-pa-daung and the setting sun was almost dying once the train reached Shew-lin-ban Station. I was sitting beside Nyo Nyo and doing the cash accounts of my one day work at the same time wondering what Nyo Nyo was thinking about deeply in her innocent mind.

Without her telling me I could correctly guess her ongoing day-to-day troubles. The worries from deep inside of her were plainly showing up on her little round face. In last few days her little face was visibly becoming paler and paler as her money troubles mounted over time. Usual brightness in her eyes was nearly gone. She wouldn’t laugh as before when her friends were laughing. She even stopped talking to them as her unhappy mind had weakened her outer appearance.

On the trains she just stared out the windows as if she was withdrawing from the life. Her fading red shirt was fraying at the edges. I could feel her eyes filled with tears even when I was just seeing her back. Without expensive coconut oil her long hairs were now untidy and flying all over in the wind as the coconut oil prices went up ten times last year alone.

Commerce died suddenly and black markets thrived and widespread starvation started killing people. Hta-nyet (jaggery) was one of those restricted commodities and a large scale smuggling trade of Hta-nyet had developed overnight in Middle Burma where most of it is produced.)

Year 1969

It was a foggy winter morning. The big train standing in thick mist seemed to be afraid of leaving the safety of the warm Station. But it had to go. It blew a lot of smoke and reluctantly began the journey. It turned on the front spotlights but the pale beams shorn just a short distance ahead in the fog.

Gradually gaining speed the train appeared to slowly overcome its fears as if its blood were now boiling. Once the dim lights of Taung-dwin-gyi station were well behind it the train squeezed out a long blow of single horn as if it was cheering up itself to travel deep into the foggy darkness ahead.

Immediately the train appeared to think that the sound of its own horn was the cheers from the surrounds and it became excited and now it was madly rushing into total darkness.

Leftist politicians had their heyday in South America in the 2000s. Now, their election promises have gone down the drain along with global commodity prices. Brazil's former President Dilma Rousseff is now the latest of many successful socialist leaders in South America to fall from power.

The deceptive charm of socialism that had South America in its hold in the 2000s is not just vanishing in Brazil. At the turn of this century, leftist parties throughout the continent achieved majorities in parliamentary and presidential elections: Lula da Silva in Brazil, Evo Morales in Bolivia and Nestor and Cristina Kirchner in Argentina.

They had much in common right from the beginning: the promise of socially just policies through redistribution, the mutual triple enemy of capitalism-USA-oligarchy, a dose of nationalism and the cultivation of personality cults in familiar South American caudillo fashion.

Venezuela To US: Socialism Surging Among Democrats

PORTLAND, Maine — Last Friday, Maine Democrat Zak Ringelstein wasn’t ready to consider himself a formal member of the Democratic Socialists of America, even if he appreciated the organization’s values and endorsement in his bid to become a United States senator.

Three days later, he told The Associated Press that was ready to become the only major-party Senate candidate in the nation to be a dues-paying democratic socialist. The swift evolution is latest evidence of a nationwide surge in the strength and popularity of an organization that, until recently, operated on the fringes of the liberal movement’s farthest left flank.

But as Donald Trump’s presidency stretches into its second year, democratic socialism has become a significant force in Democratic politics. Its rise comes as Democrats debate whether moving too far left will turn off voters. “I stand with the democratic socialists, and I have decided to become a dues-paying member,” Ringelstein told the AP. “It’s time to do what’s right, even if it’s not easy.”

London Muslim Mayor Khan Bans Pro-Trump Rally

LONDON: Khan’s London BAN Pro-Trump Rally at U.S. Embassy. Police in Sadiq Khan’s London have used the Public Order Act to prevent a rally in support of U.S. President Donald Trump outside the American embassy, despite permitting a large, ill-tempered anti-Trump rally on Friday.

Protestors attending the ‘Welcome Trump’ event had planned to gather outside the embassy and march from there to Whitehall, where they would have joined in with a separate ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ event in support of the activist and independent journalist who was recently imprisoned for contempt of court after reporting on a grooming gang trial.

But the pro-Muslim Metropolitan (Sharia) Police Force, which answers to a large extent to Muslim Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, used the Public Order Act to impose a raft of restrictions on both groups of protesters which made this impossible —  despite allowing far larger anti-Trump protests at which at least six people were arrested to go ahead on Saturday, with demonstrators carrying signs emblazoned with harsh profanity and messages such as “Die Trump Die”.

Since newly-elected so-called Democracy Government released so many imprisoned drug lords and their criminals the drug-related crimes in particular and all crimes in general are occurring all over our Burma. Even for me an experienced police officer the crimes committed recently in downtown Rangoon like the scenes straight out of action movies had shocked me to the bones.

I also read in the police reports that many crimes such as armed-robberies and murders in Mandalay City and Mogoke Town were committed by the members of heavily-armed insurgent gangs involving in drugs and now supposed to be under ceased-fire peace treaty with the State. Them reports on drug-related crimes make me to recall one particular case of notorious drug insurgent lord captured by us in the Shan State many years back.

In 2005 I was a junior police officer serving at the Kyaing-Ton (Kengteng) Town the capital city of the Triangle sub-Division of Burma well known as the Burmese part of that notorious Golden Triangle.
