DHAKA: Militants killed 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, many of them hacked to death, after taking them hostage in a Bangladesh cafe overnight, an army spokesman said on Saturday.

“We've recovered 20 bodies. Most of them had been brutally hacked to death with sharp weapons,” Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury told reporters in Dhaka. The military said 20 hostages were killed during the 10-hour standoff, and a survivor's father said the attackers spared people who could recite verses from the Quran. Six gunmen were killed during the police operation and one was captured, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a TV broadcast.

Italy's foreign minister says the bodies of nine Italians have been identified in the Dhaka restaurant attack by extremists and one Italian citizen is unaccounted for. Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni says Saturday that the person isn't among the bodies identified in a military morgue in Dhaka and isn't among the 20 victims.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Jihadist extremists hacked 20 people to death in a cafe in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka – sparing only those who could recite from the Koran – before they were gunned down by commandos.

Witnesses said seven Islamist radicals stormed the Holey Artisan bakery and cafe last night armed with assault weapons, pistols and ‘sharp objects’ before taking more than 30 people hostage.

They killed nine Italians, seven Japanese, an Indian, an American and two local men before elite commandos ended the 12-hour standoff by storming the cafe. Six of the hostage-takers were killed and one was arrested.

The hostages were given a test: recite verses from the Quran, or be punished, according to a witness. Those who passed were allowed to eat. Those who failed were tortured and slain by the Muslim terrorists.

Meteorologist and renowned sun-watcher Paul Dorian raised the alarm in his latest report, which has sparked a mild panic about an impending “Game of Thrones”-style winter not seen since the 17th century.

“For the second time this month, the sun has gone completely blank,” Dorian says. “The blank sun is a sign that the next solar minimum is approaching and there will be an increasing number of spotless days over the next few years. At first, the blankness will stretch for just a few days at a time, then it’ll continue for weeks at a time, and finally it should last for months at a time when the sunspot cycle reaches its nadir. The next solar minimum phase is expected to take place around 2019 or 2020.”

EU RESPONSE TO BREXIT: TOTALITARIAN SUPER STATE. Measure will strip sovereignty of member states. The Polish news channel TVP Info reports French and German foreign ministers are ready to reveal a super state “ultimatum” to EU countries in response to Brexit.

The totalitarian proposals will strip the sovereignty of member states and the ability to have an army. The criminal law system and central banks will also be removed and run by bureaucrats in Brussels. Additionally, member states will lose control of their borders and procedures on admitting and settling migrants.

“Our countries share a common destiny and a common set of values that give rise to an even closer union between our citizens. We will therefore strive for a political union in Europe and invite the next Europeans to participate in this venture,” a preamble to the document states.

Juliana was held down, her mouth covered to smother her screams, as a legally blind woman cut at her genitals. On the morning of her wedding - and the day after her excision - Juliana is supported as she is prepared for the ceremony. Having lost a lot of blood, she is unable to stand unaided.  

Juliana was thought to be 16 or 17 on the day she was held down while an old woman cut at her genitals with a razor blade - although her family couldn't say for sure, because in this remote part of Kenya no record was ever made of her birth.

She was to be married the following day – becoming the second wife of a man from a village 140km away from her own. And as Samburu tradition dictates that only circumcised girls can be wed, she was to undergo a most extreme form of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) called excision, whereby the external genitalia, including the clitoris, is removed.

I was there to witness this because I had been permitted to photograph her three-day wedding ceremony. It began with a day of preparation, when Juliana's head was shaved, her wedding outfit finalised, a goat skin bracelet tied around her wrist for protection and animal skins blessed.

Something mysterious happened when Barack Obama entered the Oval Office in 2009. Something vanished from that room, and no one could quite explain why.

Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that he will resign in October, heeding calls by his rivals that his position was untenable having failed to convince Britons to remain in the bloc.

"I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship in coming months, but I do not think it would be right for me to captain that ship," Cameron said on Friday morning during a news conference outside 10 Downing Street. There is no need for a precise timetable today, but we should aim to have a new prime minister in place by the start of Conservative conference in October."
